The 4G63 is dead. Long live the 4G63! Mitsubishi unveiled the Prototype X concept today alongside the 2008 Lancer. Both cars will be powered by the aluminum-block 4B11, but in a nod to its imminent future as the new Evo, the Concept X rocks a turbocharger for optimal boost-crazed amusement. Also prominently featured is a flappy-paddle torque-converter-free automated manual, which will be an option over the 5-speed manual. And, for the first time in North America, the Evo will feature the Active Yaw Control rear differential. Plus, it looks much better than the current model. The package sounds good. We'll continue to pray that it won't suck. Meanwhile, check the gallery for Lancer GSR sweetness. |

Still want that Evo X? We're not sure after seeing the first shots of the car that will bridge the gap between Mitsubishi's flagship madcap rally-derived saloon and the more conventional Lancers. The hatchback version of the Lancer is currently called the Prototype-S, and is a production certainty, the only changes between the car on the stand at Geneva and the one available in showrooms later this year being detail changes to the headlamps. It's aimed to appeal to buyers of cars like the Ford Focus ST and Subaru Impreza WRX, and has the sort of hardware to ensure that hot hatch customers take notice. Underneath the vented bonnet is a de-tuned version of the Evo X's 2.0-litre turbo engine, developing 236bhp.
More importantly though is the transmission, the Prototype-S utilising the Evo X's running gear. That should ensure it appeals to Mitsubishi's hardcore driving fans, and should make it one of the fastest point-to-point cars money can buy. Expect it to be priced at around £20,000 when it arrives later this year. Tuesday February 26 |
